The project combines the renovation of an existing grand but rural building, a landscape-led masterplan, and a new accommodation block carefully embedded within the terrain.
The site strategy prioritises minimal disturbance to the mountainous landscape by organising buildings along natural contours, preserving long-distance views and reducing earthworks, while pedestrian paths follow the topography to create a low-impact circulation network. The masterplan is structured around three zones: the renovated existing building as the social hub, a central landscape courtyard for gathering and orientation, and a new accommodation wing positioned within the slope to provide quieter sleeping spaces with valley views.
The existing stone building is restored to retain its original masonry and slate roof while introducing a new timber structure that improves thermal performance and spatial flexibility. It accommodates the communal functions of the hostel, including reception, a café and shared kitchen, lounge areas, and storage for outdoor equipment used by hikers exploring the national park.
Complementing this, the new accommodation block is partially sunken into the hillside to reduce visual impact and adopts a low horizontal profile with a green roof that blends into the surrounding vegetation. Constructed from locally Welsh larch, the building uses prefabricated timber elements to minimise on-site construction and environmental disturbance.
