A successful urban masterplan starts with people and place, building on local character while creating connected environments. It does this by bringing together a mix of uses and active public spaces to support activity across the different times of day, week, and year.
When we were approached by Bury Council to masterplan a new market, we began by engaging with the people who use it and studying the built environment, understanding what worked, what constrained the site, and how the market’s popularity could be strengthened.
Together, we explored how the market could be adapted to allow flexibility for future generations. This approach led to the creation of a new indoor FlexiHall on the site of an existing casino, a new cross-laminated market canopy, supported by high-quality public realm, and a new market square that connects the two elements and opens the market up. Environmental sustainability and respect for heritage are treated as essential infrastructure, ensuring the market remains resilient, adaptable, and deliverable for the long term. By futureproofing the flexibility, sustainability and community of the World Famous Market, the masterplan reinforces what Bury has always known: its market is the town’s heartbeat, and its DNA. The challenge wasn’t to change what works. It’s to make sure it keeps working for the next generation.
The £20 million+ regeneration of Bury Market represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine one of the UK’s most iconic markets for contemporary life.
