The wider station environment, originally designed by Grimshaw, provides a strong architectural framework defined by large spans, exposed structure and generous volumes.
Our role was to design and deliver a new hospitality environment inserted within the existing shell. The approach was to respect the clarity of the original station architecture while introducing a distinct and contemporary interior that could operate successfully as a busy pub and dining venue.
The scheme carefully layers new elements within the existing volume. All architectural insertions, including bar structures, seating zones, partitions and service areas, were designed as contemporary interventions that are clearly distinguishable from the surrounding station fabric.
A refined palette of modern materials was used throughout the project, balancing durability with a contemporary character suited to the high traffic setting of a major transport hub. Careful attention was given to the detailing of junctions, edges and interfaces between new and existing elements, ensuring the insertions read as precise architectural components within the larger shell.
The result is a vibrant pub and restaurant that responds to the scale and energy of Waterloo Station while creating a comfortable and well-defined space for customers to gather, dine and relax within one of London’s busiest transport environments.
