The space brings together local independent kitchens, artisan bakers, baristas, craft brewers, art studios, and design-led retailers within a former department store, reimagined as a future-looking social megastructure. The design of Kommune needed to feel light, fresh, and contemporary, while retaining as much of the building’s original fabric as possible to complement the new order.
The 16,000 sq ft designer dining hall accommodates 400 covers, with high dining in the central area and standard seating around the glazed perimeter. A circular bar wraps around the iconic listed staircase, alongside Baked in Brick, the Neapolitan-style pizzeria. Floor-to-ceiling window seating along Castle Street and Angel Street floods the deep-plan space with light. Furnished with booth seating at the perimeter, high tables wrapping the steel balustrade, and Babila armchairs and side chairs around bespoke dining tables, the design delivers a vibrant social hub that celebrates the building’s department store heritage in its next iteration
