Creating an interactive, immersive, and educational space

Our design for The National Videogame Museum (NVM) in Sheffield focuses on creating an interactive, immersive, and educational space where play is the primary mode of engagement.

Rather than presenting games as static objects, the museum encourages visitors to actively play a wide range of titles, from 1980s arcade machines to contemporary games, allowing them to experience the evolution of game design firsthand.

A key aspect of the design is the “behind the screen” approach, which reveals the creative processes behind game development. Exhibits such as The Art of Play showcase concept art, prototypes, and design materials, highlighting the artistic and technical labour behind games. The museum is organised into thematic zones, including the Arcade, the Lab Zone for hands-on creative activities, and Made in Sheffield, which celebrates local gaming heritage.
