YHA Bath

A careful balance between heritage and functionality

Designing YHA Bath required a careful balance between preserving heritage and introducing contemporary functionality. The project centered on the sensitive transformation of a Grade II listed Italianate villa, restoring its original architectural features while upgrading interiors for modern hostel use, including reception, communal lounges, and dining areas.

Accessibility and sustainability improvements were integrated discreetly to respect the villa’s historical character.

Alongside the villa, a new accommodation block was designed to sit lightly within the grounds, responding to the gardens and topography.

Materials, form, and scale were chosen to create a dialogue between old and new, with timber cladding and glazing that complement the villa while providing modern, efficient hostel rooms.

Working closely with heritage consultants and planners, the project achieves a harmonious fusion of past and present, offering visitors an experience where the villa’s Italianate elegance is celebrated and contemporary hospitality thrives, creating a sustainable, accessible, and inspiring space for a new generation of visitors.
